Wetaskiwin Spray Park Project

The Spray Park Committee comprises dedicated community members united in spearheading the revitalization of Wetaskiwin Recreation grounds. While our primary objective is to raise funds and construct a spray park, our broader aim is to cultivate a fully inclusive, family-centric park environment that enriches the lives of our city's residents. This encompasses the addition of diverse amenities such as an inclusive park, accessible fitness area, seating, a communal space for all ages, and eventual restroom facilities.

This initiative addresses a pressing need within our community. Despite Wetaskiwin's population of nearly 13,000 individuals, it stands as the sole eligible community in Alberta, within the 6,000 to 20,000 population range, without a spray park. Our city boasts a mosaic of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, yet currently offers limited opportunities for free, inclusive recreation — particularly for individuals with disabilities. This scarcity not only dampens enthusiasm for outdoor activities but also contributes to lower rates of physical activity. Additionally, there are very few outlets in our community for children with diverse abilities to engage in active play.

Recognizing the pivotal role of accessibility and recreation in fostering a healthy, thriving community, our committee is steadfast in the belief that nurturing family-oriented, community-driven spaces will cultivate a vibrant locale attractive to new families. In doing so, we anticipate positive economic ripple effects. Given the unexpected decline in our population over the past five years, it is imperative to champion constructive projects and community goodwill, while also enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Project Overview

Location:

After approval from Wetaskiwin City Council, the recreational grounds west of the Manluk Centre: Wetaskiwin Regional Aquatics & Fitness have been selected as the intended location of the spray park and playground. This location offers considerable benefits, as it is a central location within proximity of other services, and offers parking, security, and washrooms.

The System:

Every spray park needs an efficient system. The chosen design for the Wetaskiwin spray park is a recirculating system. This is a closed circuit system that reuses water from the play area, which is filtered and disinfected in the underground water containment system. Although this system has a higher capital cost, recirculating water systems allow for a more economical approach to water usage while also generating warmer-temperature water for users, as well as various other benefits.

The Design:

While the design is still an ongoing process, the Spray Park Committee is focused on creating a space that is accessible and inclusive for all. Accessibility and inclusion considerations are being considered during every step of the design process.

The Budget:

The projected costs are based on the initial consultation and plans and will change depending on updated needs and ideas. The quotes also reflect what our highest aspirations are for the project and are easily scaled back as final numbers come in. The projected budget as it stands would be roughly $1.2 million for the completed project at the high end. This project will be mainly funded by federal and provincial grants, community grants, community and capital donations, in-kind donations, sponsorships, and various fundraisers.

Get Involved!

There is huge potential for the recreation grounds to become a hub for many recreational activities and organizations. Volunteer opportunities will come as the project progresses.
