Background:

  • The recently completed Business Mix & Gap Analysis for Wetaskiwin provides a number of strategic recommendations on how the City can help facilitate local economic success. One of these recommended actions is redistricting Centennial Park and declaring it as surplus land in order to sell it for business development.
  • If redistricted and sold, this would result in either the whole greenspace, or a portion thereof, being transformed into a commercial or mixed-use—commercial and residential—development.
  • If council decides to proceed with the redistricting of Centennial Park, community members will be able to speak to the project as part of the required public hearing process.

As Centennial Park is currently designated Municipal Reserve (MR), a public hearing will be required in order to remove the MR designation, according to section 675(1) of the MGA. Also, according to section 675(3)(a) of the MGA, any proceeds from the sale must be spent on other park projects within the City.

We want to hear from the community—especially those who live in close proximity to the park—to determine what the park has been traditionally used for, and where we can more efficiently facilitate these activities in other areas or greenspaces of the City.

A brief survey has been developed to determine the frequency, type of use, and concerns of residents in regards to Centennial Park. *This survey is open to all City of Wetaskiwin residents ONLY, until end of day, April 11, 2021. We encourage every member of the household—over and under 18 years of age—to complete the survey.

The survey has concluded. Follow the project to stay in the loop!

More information:

  • Greenspaces are important to the City of Wetaskiwin, and we continue to beautify and invest in our many well-used parks and greenspaces.
  • The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a minimum of 9m2 of urban greenspace per capita. The City of Wetaskiwin offers approximately 33m2 of greenspace per capita.
